Facebook. Majority of us have one. I'm writing about this because I've considered it as my topic for my first paper this semester. Facebook has not only become a social network for all college students, but a bit of an obsession for most. I'm not here to "dis" facebook or talk like it's a bad thing. Partly, because unfortunately I may consider myself to be one of those who have found facebook to be more than just a social network. Facebook has been popular for several years but lately it seems to be growing rapidly. The social network started with myspace then to facebook.
Let's talk about the pros and cons of Facebook. The biggest advantage is the ability to connect with people. By the click of a button, you are reunited with an old friend or classmate. Does it get much better than that? Facebook allows you to have your own profile including friends, pictures, videos, and links. At any point you are allowed to answer the question, "What's on your mind?" I'd say some people take this to a whole other level. Yes, I love Facebook but you won't find me updating my status every hour of every day. Which brings me to a "con" of Facebook. There is a point where I believe people should ask themselves this question: "Do people honestly care about what I have to say right now?" Some people would be surprised of how often the answer is "no."
Another "pro" of Facebook would be the ability to follow your favorite artist, show, sports team, etc. Facebook has Fan pages for each allowing you to "like" that page, updating their upcoming shows and games in your News Feed. On a more personal level, this social network allows people to find people they gave up hope on finding. We've all heard the stories of the people that have found their kids, or parents. I have gotten connected with my grandparents that live in California. Even though, I'm not able to see them often, Facebook allows us to talk and share pictures. I also have personally experienced the greatest advantage of Facebook, meeting new people. If it wasn't for Facebook, I wouldn't have met the man of my dreams! (a.k.a my boyfriend)
On to the "cons" of Facebook. It's a distraction, end of story. This assignment for instance, I don't know how many times I've left this page to check my Facebook. I could easily bet that a lot of other college students could agree with me. It's a habit to just check it, look around and see what everyone else is up to, anything to keep me from doing my homework. With the help of technology, most everyone has access to Facebook through their iphones or smartphones, not helping the distraction when it comes to homework time!
Well, this has been my little rant on the Pros and Cons of Facebook. Thank you all for reading & I hope you enjoyed!:)

Fake shooting?
Officer Jeff Stenroos works for the Los Angeles Unified School District Police Department. On January 19th, 2011 he reported that he had been shot in the chest in the West Fernando Valley. Stenroos said that he had been shot by a man who was peering through car windows near the El Camino High School. This alleged shooting caused the local schools to be on lock-down for hours while police searched the area for the suspect. After a few days, authorities released a sketch of the alleged shooter, and the reward for any information regarding the suspect grew up to $100,000. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said, Thursday night, that Stenroos had been arrested on a felony count for filing a false police report. Also, stating that "the current state of the investigation refutes Stenroos initial account of the incident and we are now certain that there is no outstanding suspect in this shooting." Stenroos was released shortly before midnight on a $20,000 bail. The school district Superintendant Ramon Cortines directed the police chief to immediately relieve Stenroos and begin the dismissing process. It is still unclear as to what happened to Stenroos. Mr. Beck had initially said that he had been treated for the bruising caused by the bullet's impact on his bulletproof vest, but has now backed away from that possibility. "There's evidence that a round was expended, where and when that happened is subject to speculation," Beck said. Not only did he get arrested, lose his job, but the City Council voted Friday to sue Stenroos for the cost of the manhunt, which estimated out to be about $500,000. Beck was asked if there had been any previous incidents like this one, and he referred back to 1984. Here, an officer named Jimmy Pearson diffused a bomb-like device he had found on a bus carrying the Turkyish Olympic team.
I chose to write about this because it definately caught my eye. To think that those we trust to serve and protect us are out scamming us, it's rather uncomforting. I believe that Officer Stenroo deserved everything he got, and maybe more. It just seems a little suspicious that a person would just fake an attack like that, I don't understand what his motive was behind the hoax. If someone was trying to be positive about the situation, I guess it's good that nobody got hurt. It's sad to see this waste of money and time for so many people, but now that it's somewhat resolved maybe everyone can move on with their lives. It's also good to see that a person like that no longer serves for the community. Maybe now, people will look further into who they hire to serve and protect our people.
