Tonight, I'm going to write about the "Green River Killer." Sounds crazy, right? The Green River Killer is a man that goes by the name of Gary Ridgeway. The most prolific known serial killer in United States history. The same man that just recently pleaded quilty to his 49th murder convinction. Authorities filed an aggravation murder charge against Gary related to the murder of Becky Marrero, a twenty year old mother, over twenty-eight years ago. Ridgeway is already serving forty-eight consecutive life sentences for slaying women.
Ridgeway was arrested in 2001in King County and accused of five murders. Two years later, when the prosecutors were preparing seven more muder cases, Gary offered to confess to those seven murder victims and forty-one others. Most of the women were prostitutes, officials say. Ridgeway stated that he targetted prostitutes "because I thought I could kill as many of them as I wanted without getting caught."
Gary continued to say that he hated prostitutes and didn't want to pay them for sex. Ridgeway also claimed he killed so many women he had a hard time keeping track of them.
Forty-six of these women were found near Seattle, and two of them found in Washington County, Oregon. Back in November 2003, Ridgeway was sentenced to forty-eight counts of aggravated murder. This is also when prosecutors then agreed not to seek the dealth penalty on Ridgeway if he agreed to "plead guilty to any and all future cases."
Becky Marrero remains were found by teens back in December. The teens were exploring a ravine near the town of Auburn. Gary Ridgeway confessed to the slaying of Becky Marrero. Although, he was unable to give enough details to warrant a charge. That is, until the remains were found. After being charged witb yet another life sentence, Ridgeway returned back to his cell at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
This is what I don't understand...it seems to be a routine for this guy. So what's the difference between killing one person or two, rather than forty-nine? You recieve a life sentence if you kill a single human being. Ridgeway has killed FORTY-NINE women...and gets forty-nine life sentences. Which, is nothing more than a plea and returns back to his cell? Maybe I don't know how the system works completely. I'm just having a hard time understanding how the consequences are equal when a person kills one person and another perosn kills forty-nine. Yes, more and more families are finding justice. I'm not trying to say anything bad about our system. Its just cases like this, I don't understand how people can get away with just life sentences. It doesn't seem like jail time is enough.
I found this story really interesting. Mainly because I've never heard of the Green River Killer, until now. It really makes me sick to think about all the women he's killed and how many families have been affected by him.
Now, i hope next week, I can STOP waiting until last minute to do these things. Procrastination is never a good thing. Anyway, thank you for reading! :)
Your absolutely right. What's the difference if you kill one or 49? Just because he plead guilty and confessed to all of them, the decided to give him life sentences for all of them. That makes no sense. How long is a "life sentence", and how in the world can he serve 49? He should have been executed. He's a disgusting excuse of a human being.
